Presentation Star Hopping Art Russell |
![]() Art Russell introduced us to "star hopping" with a very simple approach: treat the sky like a map, and do what you normally do to find your way around on the surface of the Earth, only apply your skills to landmarks in the sky.
|
|
Art emphasized the need to judge positions
and areas in the sky in degrees, so that you can relate what you see in
the sky to star charts. Art reminded us that the human hand at
arm's length is an excellent "yard stick" for this. Knowing the
field of view of your telescope with different eyepieces is also an
essential part of star hopping. Please visit Art's website for

As Art continued his talk he offered a demonstration of star hopping from the observing field after sunset. The skies cleared nicely, and several members and guests stayed till nearly 10:00 PM, star hopping, imaging comet Machholz and viewing the planet Saturn. Thanks Art!
