March 2006 Chapter
Meeting |
|
The Feature presentation this month was a two part hands-on demonstration on how astronomers take and analyze spectra. The first part stepped chapter members through taking spectra of specific stars and identifying the spectral class of each star using a computer simulated observatory. The second and most challenging exercise involved taking spectra of several galaxies and calculating Hubble's constant from the red-shift of each spectrum. The group also had a chance to use diffraction gratings to actually see the spectrum of several common gases using a laboratory light source. We had a great turnout and everyone thoroughly enjoyed the program. Many thanks to our host Jim Honeycutt for an excellent event! |
