According to the by-laws of the Charlie Elliott Chapter, club officers are to serve for one year and elections are to be held during the May general meeting. The director is to appoint an election committee to conduct the elections. This year, Debbie Jones was asked to conduct the elections. Debbie read the responsibilities of each chapter position from the by-laws, announced current candidates and asked for any additional candidates from the members present. Larry Owens was announced as the unopposed candidate for Director, and Clevis Jones was announced as the unopposed candidate for Recording Secretary. No candidate stepped forward for the Observing Supervisor position. Debbie called for a show of hands for each candidate and the following officers were elected unanimously: Larry Owens - Director, Webmaster, Interim Observing Supervisor* Clevis Jones - Recording Secretary *The Director will serve as the Observing Supervisor until someone is appointed. Congratulations!

The club business part of Larry's presentation covered progress on the mobile wedge for the Byers mount (including a detailed drawing), the donation of a second 16" telescope to the chapter and several events requiring volunteers including Jake's Day on May 21st and three Charlie Elliott summer camp programs occurring in June and July. Larry's current events presentation briefly covered Nasa's Deep Impact mission to comet 9P/Temple 1, Mars rovers Spirit and Opportunity, Hubble's 15th birthday and the return to flight of the space shuttle.

What's Up Tonight |

Debbie Jones gives her last "What's Up" presentation as Observing Supervisor, accompanied by our chapter mascot, Junior the dog (taking a nap). Debbie detailed a number of interesting facts about what would be visible from the observing field later that evening. Thanks Debbie for the many hundreds of hours you've spent creating and giving presentations to the chapter, organizing observing events and making the Charlie Elliott Chapter a great place to explore the universe!
