Byers Mount Project
Update 01/16/06
We're almost there. The ALCOR circuit was
tested for the first time in the mount, with wiring harnesses and connectors
installed and IT WORKED! The tiny hand controller works beautifully
and the scope makes a beautiful humming sound when powered up. An
adapter was created for mounting the 16" Sonatube OTA this week and after a
few final adjustments, it will be time to test the mount under the stars.

It's ALIVE! Power was first applied to the
mount at 7:21 PM, January 16th, 2006. This is the first full turn of
the RA worm in the mount's second incarnation as the primary scope for the
Charlie Elliott Chapter. |

Here's a look under the hood. The
Covington Innovations ALCOR circuitry is mounted under the black plexi-glass
control pannel. All wiring is routed and restrained to prevent
wire or connector breakage when the control panel is removed.
Everything was thoroughly tested before applying power for the first
time.
|

There is no electrical tape on this mount.
All spliced wires are soldered and sealed with heat shrinkable tubing.
Of course there are cable restraints at each motor and along the
declination assembly to prevent wires from getting in the way.
|

Poised and ready for action, all that remains
is to figure out how to get the beast out of my basement, a few minor
adjustments and mounting of the Sonatube OTA for testing.

|
More updates to come. We're planning to have our "like new"
mount on display at the January 21st CE meeting, more or less completed.
See you there! |
